So you do know that with all those sci-fi movies we know all kinds or to say a lot of new things are possible. Especially a few things that appear weird today will soon be a new normal.
One such thing is lab-grown meat. Yes, you heard it right! You know that meat consumption is a necessity if even a world-threatening pandemic can't stop people from crowding in meat shops on Sundays. But with lab-grown meat that very same meat need not be maintained by big animal farming groups. It can be grown in a lab. Lab-grown meat might sound hazardous or unnatural. It may result in loss of livelihood and employment.
But why we shouldn't be giving up on lab-grown meat is what this article is about.
Water is the new petrol which is no secret. Pollution, climate change, environmental damage, habitat loss, animal extinction, global warming, and politics over the scarcity of various resources are all the bigger issues of our time. And the all above-mentioned issues are not something less serious.
But meat production is a black sheep that has hand in many of such issues. Example: Amazon fire is an unforgettable incident. And what did we learn the cause of the fire? Cattle ranchers setting fire to forest to clear out the land for cattle grazing.
Cattle grazing is one of the important reasons for the shrinking of forest cover. The meat production industry is one of the highest greenhouse gas emitting industries which no doubt causes pollution, global warming, and other environmental problems.
The meat industry wastes a tremendous amount of water too. Approximately about one third of
the world’s water consumption is used for producing animal products.
Antibiotics like colistin are used in livestock and poultry feed. The World Health Organization
has said that antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security,
and development today.
The meat industry also involves the animals being crammed into farms, face extreme cruelty
during their lives and are inhumanely slaughtered.
So as a solution, we can increase the production of healthy and nutritious plant-based meat
and innovate the technology to manufacture “cultivated meat”, also called clean meat. Doesn't it
sound both delicious and environment-friendly?
Clean meat is grown in a lab from a small sample of cells taken from an animal. Both plant based
meat and clean meat are free of the negative externalities that animal meat production. It is
also healthier as it is free of antibiotics.
Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are the biggest companies in this sector.
So lab meat is something that can help combat environmental issues and at the same time, it gives us a chance to enjoy antibody free, clean meat which might also become less expensive if the industry is properly promoted. Oh don't forget that lab meat is as far as I know has zero waste meat. It helps to preserve food security and factories won't take a big chunk of land like conventional ones which help to set up other industries instead of clearing out forest lands.
Does it still sound bad?
Lab-grown meat may have its own disadvantages? But that is a topic for another post!!
